The Homosexual Movement:
Exploding the Myths

... Our chief task in the years ahead: to work at the level of home and workplace, church and school board, neighborhood and city hall to bring together in the minds of straight Americans the institution they claim to cherish above all–namely the family–and the phenomenon that many of them passionately despise: homosexuality. If we can do that, everything else will follow....

So wrote Bruce Bawer in the January 24, 1995 issue of The Advocate, a homosexual weekly, clarifying for readers the agenda and ambition of the homosexual movement. The breakdown of resistance to that agenda has long since begun, with the full complicity of the media and a largely uneducated public. Many Christians, deluged day-by-day with data that seems to support homosexual claims, are becoming confused about what they can–and should–in good conscience believe about homosexuals.

Creating that confusion is a major component of the homosexual agenda. The following information, then, is presented to help uproot those carefully planted doubts–to clarify the goals of homosexuals–and to instill in conscientious Christians not only a keen sense of the current social agendas, but a deepening conviction of our need to pray for and minister to these souls.

As part of their effort to desensitize the American public to the perversion of their lifestyle, homosexuals are sowing a series of false assertions in the mind of society through the entertainment and news media. Among those assertions:

For all the recent "scientific studies" declaring homosexuality to be a genetic mandate, there remains no conclusive proof of that assertion, and no clear scientific consensus on the impact of a person's genes on his sexual orientation.

Three studies, in particular, have drawn enormous attention in recent years.

1.1 A study of 28 sets of fraternal twins (all homosexual) purported to show that homosexuality is an inherited trait. But geneticists point out that to be even remotely meaningful such a study would have to:
   –compare twins raised separately (these were all raised together),
   –be based on a more representative sampling (subjects for this test were drawn from advertisements in homosexual publications), and
   –involve a much larger test group.

1.2 Researcher Simon LeVay's study of 45 corpses–all of them victims of AIDS complications–concluded that in the brains of most of the homosexuals victims the hypothalamus was slightly smaller ... more evidence, apparently, of a genetic predisposition for homosexuality. The study, however, drew criticism even among some homosexuals, since
   –the researcher couldn't verify the sexual orientation of any of the subjects,
   –in 20 percent of his cases, the homosexual hypothalamuses were found to be normal, and the heterosexual hypothalamuses were found to be smaller–an incredible margin of error!
   –nothing in the study was able to confirm whether the reduced hypothalamuses were the CAUSE or the result of homosexual behavior.

1.3 A scientist who the media reportedly claimed to have isolated a "gay gene" in the DNA of homosexuals has since admitted that "environmental factors, not simply genetic predispositions, play a role in development of sexual orientation." In a new book, the scientist, Dean Hamer, even writes: "There is no gay gene. It's not like a light switch. What we're looking for is more likely to be comparable to a dimmer that turns things up or down." Significantly, no other scientist has been able to duplicate Hamer's research. Each of these studies was conducted by a homosexual, and each drew nearly unquestioned applause and enormous media attention; contradictions and flaws in the arguments continue to be largely ignored. The fact remains, however, that no substantial, demonstrable evidence exists to prove that homosexuality is an inherited characteristic ... and while some credible scientists and researchers still hold that theory to be true–at least as many equally credible scientists are still persuaded that homosexuality is a matter of choice, not genetic heritage.

In fact, a large number of people are leaving the lifestyle–many with the help of Christian therapeutic organizations. One Kinsey Institute report stated that 84 percent of homosexuals and 29 percent of heterosexuals changed their "sexual orientation" at lest once in a lifetime; 32 percent of homosexuals say they've shifted more than once–13 percent say they've changed more than five times.

And an 1974 Masters and Johnson study recorded a 71.6 percent success rate over a six–year period for those homosexuals who had expressed a desire to change.

The homosexual movement, though, is making a determined effort to undermine any therapy program aimed at helping homosexuals go "straight." The American Psychological Association–which has already taken homosexuality off its "deviant" list–has yielded to pressure from homosexual activists and launched an ongoing effort to "discourage psychologists and other mental health professionals from providing treatment designed to change sexual orientation, or from referring to practitioners which claim to do so."

The reason for this hostility is obvious–every homosexual who willingly foregoes his deviant behavior is further proof that homosexuality is not, in fact, a genetic predisposition ... only a matter of choice.

3. Homosexuality is not abnormal–It's merely an "alternative lifestyle."

Convincing Americans that homosexuals are "normal" is the essence of the homosexual agenda. In "The Overhauling of Straight America," an article that has become a virtual public relations guide for homosexuals, authors Marshall Kirk and Erastes Pill write:

Our campaign should not demand direct support for homosexual activities, but should instead use anti–discriminations as its theme....

Talk about gays and gayness as loudly and as often as possible. The principle behind this advice is simple: almost any behaviour begins to look normal if you are exposed to enough of it.

Finally, we would have straights register differences in sexual preferences the way they register tastes for ice creams or sports games; she likes strawberry and I like vanilla; he follows baseball and I like football. No big deal.

In the early stages of any campaign to reach straight America, the masses should not be shocked and repelled by premature exposure to homosexual behavior itself. Instead, the imagery of sex should be downplayed and gay–rights should be reduced to an abstract social question as much as possible. First let the camel get his nose inside the tent–and only later his unsightly derriere!

This, then, is the homosexual strategy in a nutshell–de-sensitize the American public. Use every cultural cosmetic to help individuals grow accustomed to the face of the homosexual movement ... save the gruesome details until such time as they are no longer quite so gruesome.

4. A person who opposes homosexuality must be homophobic.

The term "phobia" comes from a Greek word for "fear." But to disapprove of something is not necessarily to fear it. As columnist Jeffrey Hart writes:

Do so-called homophobes fear homosexuals? Of course not. They simply disapprove of homosexuality. In this they have the support of virtually every civilization in recorded human history.

The disposition to support the human norm is now defined as a disease. If you approve of the norm, you are yourself ill: a homophobe. No doubt you require therapy.

Who is, in fact, a better friend to homosexuals–the one who encourages their descent into perversion, cloaking their choice in euphemisms like "alternative lifestyle" ... or the one who honestly, compassionately, courageously confronts them with the truth and the consequences of their sin?

5. Homosexuality is a private, personal matter. Most homosexual activity goes on discreetly "behind closed doors."

A recent gay-and-lesbian day at Orlando's Walt Disney World drew some 50,000 people. Over a two-week period this May, six of the top-20 programs on prime-time television aired episodes that favorably profiled the homosexual lifestyle. Time Warner, Inc. is considering launching a magazine for gay and lesbian readers. And gay and lesbian pride parades are becoming an annual fixture in Washington, D.C., and other major cities.

6. Homosexual rights are no different from any other civil rights.

The drive to persuade voters and government officials that the sexual preferences of homosexuals deserve the same legal protection and endorsement as the political rights of racial minorities and religious sects is gathering momentum.

The homosexual lobby is now a major political powerhouse–and not just in the Democratic Party. In the wake of the 1994 Congressional elections, an increasing number of homosexual lobbyists and activists are seeking out GOP consultants and advisors for suggestions on how to hitch the homosexual agenda to the coattails of the Contract With America.

Federal tax dollars are regularly helping to support "gay pride" and other policies of the homosexual agenda in the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, State and Transportation. Cabinet level officials are openly, even enthusiastically endorsing homosexual rights.

Homosexuals also receive tax-payer-funded support for their agenda through federal funding of the National Endowment for the Arts, which contributes millions to museums and projects that endorse or express the homosexual lifestyle. And homosexual activists have succeeded in diverting millions of tax dollars to AIDS research, AIDS victim relief, and condom distribution campaigns.

While homosexuals have experienced persecution through the years, many of the latest cries of victimhood are part of a calculated pose to win the support of mainstream society.

In the Platform for Lesbian, Gay, and BI Equal Rights and Liberation–a virtual battle plan for the homosexual movement–point No. 5 states:

Portray gays as victims of circumstance and oppression, not as aggressive challengers. In any campaign to win over the public, gays must be portrayed as victims in need of protection so that straights will ... adopt the role of protector....

We must forego the temptation to strut our gay pride publicly to such an extent that we will undermine our victim image.

Clearly, homosexual leaders are maneuvering to draw out the Christians' compassion at the expense of their spiritual discernment ... yet another reason why Christians need to understand exactly what the Scriptures teach about homosexuality. Our love must be real and sincere–but firmly grounded in the uncompromising truth of Jesus Christ.

Only God's love can reach out to these lost and damaged souls–but only repentance will bring them to salvation.

8. The homosexual lifestyle is no more dangerous than a "straight" lifestyle.

In fact, most homosexuals die young. The average lifespan of a healthy heterosexual is 75 years. The average lifespan of a homosexual who does NOT contract AIDS is 42 years. Both the alcoholism and suicide rates are higher among homosexuals.

9. Homosexuals make up a significant segment of the population.

A famous 1947 Kinsey study maintained that at least one in every 10 men is homosexual. More recent studies have corrected that error–in fact, the number is only about one in 100.

10. Homosexuals have become more careful and monogamous in the age of AIDS.

Some 88 percent of declared homosexuals indulge in public, anonymous, unprotected group sex. The best-selling homosexual manuals enthusiastically promote illicit and "kinky" sex acts and experimentation. And statistics indicate that the typical homosexual has sex with between 10 and 110 different partners every year.

11. Homosexuals would be able to live healthier, and more stable lives if society would only remove the moral and legal obstacle to homosexual rights..

In fact, statistics indicate that in the areas of the United States where the law is most permissive and indulgent of homosexuality, the death rate for homosexuals is as high or higher than that in areas where the laws are still restrictive.

12. Homosexuality is just another expression of love. Christians, of all people, should be tolerant of other people's views, as long as they're presented in an atmosphere of love.

The Bible is filled with references–both Old and New Testament–that make it clear that homosexuality is "an abomination" (Leviticus 18:22) closely tied to (and often resulting in) idolatry and apostasy. God made it a special point to tell the Israelites that they were not to make any covenant with the Canaanites, who had elevated sodomy to a religious rite (Deuteronomy 7:2-4). Israel chose to do so anyway, and incurred the same judgment God had prescribed for the Canaanites (Judges 2:9-15, 4:1–3)

Paul, too, described in detail the seriousness of the sin of sodomy, writing in Romans that those homosexuals who refused to turn from that "lifestyle" would be abandoned by God to uncleanness,

in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.... For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. Foe even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil–mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:24-32 ).

Christians are indeed called to compassion, but to a courageous compassion that confronts sin and calls sinners to repentance and saving faith in Jesus Christ.

WHAT HOMOSEXUALS SAY

...Demanding a separation between church and state isn't enough; the churches' basic doctrines must be changed, with homophobia written out forever. (Michelangelo Signorile, Out, 11/94).

...Scott O'Hara, who spent five years as a porn star in the early 1980s ... has penned a series of articles [on] "How I Got AIDS" ... in which he tries "to be humorous and sexy because I think [AIDS] is both. The fact is I got AIDS from having sex, and I'm sort of proud I was that adventurous." (Jim Merrett, Frontiers, 11/19/93).

What makes more sense than ... teaching a young girl about [lesbian] sex, and showing her what it is about? God, boys certainly don't know how to give sex to girls. The young girl may not end up gay, but at the same time she probably will if it is a good experience for her. (Letter from "M and T," Memphis, Bad Attitudes, vol. 8, p. 3).

How many gay men, I wonder, would have missed out on a valuable, liberating experience–one that initiated them into their sexuality–if it weren't for so-called molestation? (Carl Maves, The Advocate, 5/5/92).

A middle ground might be to fight for same-sex marriage and its benefits and then, once granted, redefine the institution of marriage completely, to demand the right to marry not as a way of adhering to society's moral codes but rather to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution that as it now stands keeps us down. The most subversive action [homosexuals] can undertake–and one that would perhaps benefit all of society–is to transform the notion of "family" entirely. That is the revolution that lies at the heart of the homosexual movement–the determination to bring upheaval and sweeping change to American homes, churches, courts, and halls of government, and to incorporate their self-destructive agenda at every level of society

Theirs is the way of doom ... and they are determined that nothing will stop them. Indeed, nothing will–save the power and mercy and grace of God.

Please ... pray for these lost men and women. Pray for those grappling with the social and political pressures of the homosexual movement. And pray for the Christians striving to win this nation back for their children.
